He was niftar on the 27th of Av (Za"Ch Menachem Av) 5702 (1942), which would make this year of 5772 (2012) his 70th yartzeit.

Also, the following day--28 Av (Ko"aCh Menachem Av)--is the yartzeit of (according to his Wikipedia entry in Hebrew, which has much more detail than the English version) R' David Yehudah Aryeh Leib Cohen, ztvk"l, the Nazir of Jerusalem. He was niftar in the year 5732 (1972), which would make this year his 40th yartzeit. He was a talmid of the Chafetz Chaim, ztvk"l, and talmid muvhak of R' Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, ztvk"l. He was a tremendous mekubal and incredible Torah scholar (he authored the sefer Kol Nevuah, among other things), but perhaps his "claim to fame" is the fact that he took upon himself a Nazirite vow upon reaching Yerushalayim. As such, he is mostly referred to as HaRav HaNazir. His father was R' Yosef Yozpa Kagan, zt"l, who in turn was the son of R' Zechariah Mendel HaKohen Katz, zt"l. (It looks like both his father and grandfather were rabbis of cities, his father being Rav of Vilna and his grandfather being Rav of Radin. However, since my Hebrew isn't all that great, it's possible that I've misinterpreted the Wikipedia entry. Of course, feel free to check it out for yourself.) His son-in-law was R' Shlomo Goren, zt"l, who blew the shofar at the Kotel upon its liberation from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War, and who later served as Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel from 1973-1983 (his Sefardi counterpart was R' Ovadia Yosef, shlit"a). His son is R' She'ar-Yashuv Cohen, shlit"a, also a man of tremendous accomplishment.

I hope you find all of this helpful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
